Erasmus+
Changing Lives and Building Skills
Part 3/3

Chapter 3: Shaping the Future of Erasmus+

Expanding Opportunities and Access

As Erasmus+ enters a new phase, there is a strong push to make the program more inclusive and accessible. Key demands include significantly increasing the program budget, improving the evaluation process for grants, and ensuring that financial guidelines are equally implemented across all participating countries. There is also a call to create explicit definitions of groups considered as participants with fewer opportunities to facilitate access to information, targeting, and monitoring.

Embracing Sustainability and Green Travel

Sustainability is a core priority for the future of Erasmus+. The program encourages eco-friendly project design and green practices in all activities. There are proposals to increase the top-up for green travel and proportionately align it to the distance covered, maintaining the recent increase for 2024 in the upcoming years. Erasmus+ is committed to promoting environmentally responsible mobility and reducing its carbon footprint.

Potential for Growth and Impact

Despite its successes, there is still room for Erasmus+ to grow and reach even more participants. Success rates for project applications vary significantly across different actions, from 97% in Higher Education to just 32% for School staff. This indicates a great deal of potential for future absorption capacities, particularly in the fields of Youth and School education.

Future Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its success, Erasmus+ faces challenges, including budget cuts. The proposed €295 million reduction in the 2025 budget has raised concerns among lawmakers and stakeholders, who argue that such cuts could undermine the program's credibility and impact. However, Erasmus+ remains committed to supporting Ukraine, addressing the significant educational challenges faced by those affected by the war. The program will continue to facilitate incoming learning mobility, fight against disinformation, and promote the integration of refugees.

As Erasmus+ continues to evolve and adapt to changing needs, it remains a beacon of hope for a brighter, more sustainable future. With its continued focus on inclusion, diversity, and digital transformation, the program is poised to shape the future of education and training in Europe and beyond[1]. Erasmus+ has been a game-changer for millions of Europeans, offering them the opportunity to expand their horizons, develop new skills, and boost their employability. As the program looks to the future, it is poised to become even more inclusive, sustainable, and impactful. By investing in the knowledge, skills, and experiences of its participants, Erasmus+ is shaping a brighter, more connected future for Europe.
