Changing Lives and Building Skills
Part 2/3

Chapter 2: Enhancing Employability and Skills

Digital Transformation and Green Development

In line with the Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027), Erasmus+ supports the development of high-performing digital education ecosystems. It helps build capacity and critical understanding on how to exploit digital technologies for teaching and learning, fostering both basic and advanced digital skills[1]. The program also places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, promoting green practices and sustainable travel modes. Erasmus+ encourages participants to prioritize green travel, offering stronger incentives for sustainable travel choices.

A Competitive Edge in the Job Market

In today's global economy, international experience is a valuable asset. Erasmus+ equips participants with the skills and competencies employers are looking for. Studies show that 92% of employers are seeking transversal skills such as adaptability, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities - traits that are boosted by the Erasmus+ experience. Erasmus students are half as likely to experience long-term unemployment compared to their non-mobile peers, and five years after graduation, their unemployment rate is 23% lower.

From Traineeship to Employment

Erasmus+ isn't just about studying abroad; it also offers opportunities for traineeships in companies and organizations across Europe. These experiences often lead to direct employment. More than one in three Erasmus trainees is offered a position at the enterprise where they complete their traineeship. Furthermore, Erasmus trainees are more entrepreneurial - 1 in 10 has started their own company, and more than 3 out of 4 plan to or can imagine doing so.

With an annual budget of €4.3 billion, Erasmus+ continues to offer a wide range of mobility and cooperation activities. The program supports transnational experiences for school pupils, higher education and vocational education and training students, adult learners, educators, and staff. By fostering the development of competences and skills, the program helps participants become more attractive to employers, improving their chances of securing employment.

Developing 21st Century Skills

In an era of rapid technological change and global challenges, Erasmus+ is equipping participants with the skills needed for the future. The program supports the development of digital skills, competencies in forward-looking fields such as clean energy, artificial intelligence, and robotics, and the promotion of active citizenship and democratic participation. By investing in knowledge, skills, and competencies, Erasmus+ is contributing to sustainable growth, equity, prosperity, and social inclusion in Europe and beyond.
