Chapter 2: Prominent Current TEN-T Projects

Rail Baltica: Connecting the Baltic States

The Rail Baltica project aims to integrate the Baltic States into the European rail network by constructing a new high-speed rail line connecting Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas, and Warsaw. The project, co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), will significantly reduce travel times and promote sustainable transport in the region.

  • Key facts about Rail Baltica:
  • Total length: 870 km
  • Design speed: 249 km/h for passenger trains, 120 km/h for freight trains
  • Estimated completion: 2026
  • Total estimated cost: €5.8 billion

Brenner Base Tunnel: Crossing the Alps

The Brenner Base Tunnel is a key TEN-T project that will connect Austria and Italy through a 55 km railway tunnel under the Alps. As the world's longest underground rail connection, it will reduce travel times, increase freight capacity, and shift traffic from road to rail.

  • Total length: 64 km (including access tunnels)
  • Estimated completion: 2032
  • Total estimated cost: €8.7 billion
  • Co-funded by the EU, Austria, and Italy
